Widian Mobile Functionality
Widian Mobile opens new possibilities for all who have dreamed of fast and secure mobile access to their intranet solutions. Key features of the back-end groupware system and intranet information systems are made available to mobile professionals.
Active mobile e-mail with filtering
New e-mail messages are made available automatically on the user’s handset either with the whole message including the header and attachments, header and message body, or with header only. Instant alerts upon the receipt notify the user of received messages (check phone compatibility). Alerts are automatically disabled when the phone is set in silent mode.
Mail messages sent from the mobile phone are copied to a user-defined sent items folder in the user’s groupware mailbox making it easy for the user to keep track of the status of sent messages. SMTP authentication is needed for sending e-mail messages.
An easy to use advanced filtering system keeps the user in control of which e-mail messages will be delivered to the phone. Users can create and select filtering rules for different purposes such as business trip, time off or time in the office.
A Web-based desktop user interface is available for creating and modifying mail rules. The active rules can be changed using the mobile phone.
Automatic calendar, task and contact synchronization
Assistant is a mobile phone application providing synchronization of appointment, task and contact information. Availability of task and contact synchronization depends on back-end groupware functionality.
Calendar synchronization keeps the user up-to-date at all times by synchronizing data between the desktop and mobile calendars. Calendar synchronization is based on SyncML. An alert informs the user about a new appointment. In addition, a listing of new and modified calendar entries makes time management even easier.
Technical informationWidian Mobile is a Java-based (J2EE) system running on Suse Enterprise Linux Server 11 platform (SLES11). It is based on common open standards (e.g. HTTP, IMAP, SMTP, SyncML, JDBC, LDAP). LDAP support provides authentication against an external authentication server.
To protect access over the unsafe public Internet, Widian Mobile 3.0 supports SSL/TLS-protected IMAP, SMTP, SyncML, and HTTP connections between mobile devices and Widian Mobile servers.
The most typically used network connections are 3G/UMTS and GPRS but other connection types including HSCSD, or WLAN are also available.
The supported mobile phones include Nokia Series 60 phones. There may be limitations to availability of functionality in different phone models. Widian Mobile can also be used with other mobiles devices like Windows Mobile devices, Android devices and iPhone that support IMAP and SyncML (Synthesis SyncML client required).
