Case: Upgrading and Virtualizing Groupware System

This Teamware case example represents a customer system that goes through a full system software and hardware upgrade including virtualization.

After the upgrade, the workers could utilize the new functionality and improved features of Teamware Office 7.4 in the daily communication. The hardware and system upgrade was designed to match the performance requirements and along with the virtualization to make the system administration easier. The system upgrade included also the platform change from Solaris to Microsoft Windows Server.

The system plan specified the system hardware and virtualized server structure. The Teamware Office server, an external SMTP gateway, Free Text Search server and the file system were installed as virtual servers in one Windows 2008 Hyper-V Server. The RAID10 level disk storage provided 5 TB allocated disk space. The capacity of the upgraded system was design also to meet the future requirements, including the Mail Archiving storage needs.

The hardware solution for the server was Fujitsu Primergy RX300 S4 and the storage system was FibreCAT SX60 disk storage, connected with two optical fibre cables. All disks are mirrored and the backup relies on the tape unit connected to its own fibre switch port. All server hardware is placed in the centralized server rack that includes also other application servers. The floor space requirement, air conditioning and electric power consumption of the upgraded servers follow the latest environmental specifications.

The installation phase of the system upgrade followed the system plan straight-forwardly and was completed when the user accounts and the groupware information database was transferred to the new system.

For the users, the upgrade brought the latest Teamware Office version 7.4 with Mail, Calendar, Library and Forum, and the new Free Text Search functionality. For the system administration, the upgraded system provides an efficient and robust server environment in a modern, environment-friendly computer center.
